 Indications / Uses of ANGEL-50 Losartan 50mg Tablet

Losartan is used for:
  • Treating high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults, children (6-18 years), and teenagers.
  • Protecting the kidneys in adults with Type 2 diabetes who have kidney impairment and protein in urine.
  • Managing chronic heart failure when ACE inhibitors are unsuitable as determined by a doctor; however, switching from ACE inhibitors to Losartan is not recommended if heart failure is stable.
  • Reducing the risk of stroke in patients with high blood pressure and thickened left ventricle (LIFE indication).
Losartan Tablets belong to the Angiotensin-II Receptor Blockers group of medicines. They work by preventing Angiotensin-II, a substance that tightens blood vessels and raises blood pressure, from attaching to receptors. This action helps blood vessels relax, lowering blood pressure. For people with high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes, Losartan also slows kidney function decline.
 

What are the side-effects of ANGEL-50 Losartan 50mg Tablet?

Like all medicines, this medicine may cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.
If you have any of the following symptoms, stop taking Losartan tablets right away and notify your doctor or go to the emergency room at the nearest hospital:
  • Severe allergic reaction, which may include a rash, itching, or swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or throat that could make swallowing or breathing difficult.
Common Side Effects:
  • Dizziness or vertigo
  • Low blood pressure, especially after fluid loss
  • Orthostatic effects (blood pressure drop when standing)
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
  • High blood potassium levels (hyperkalemia)
  • Changes in kidney function, including kidney failure
  • Decreased red blood cell count (anemia)
  • Increased urea, creatinine, and potassium levels in heart failure patients
Less Common Side Effects:
  • Drowsiness
  • Headache
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Palpitations (increased heart rate sensation)
  • Severe chest pain (angina pectoris)\
  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
  • Abdominal pain
  • Severe constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Itching (pruritus)
  • Rash
  • Localized swelling (edema)
  • Cough
Rare Side Effects:
  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Angioedema
  • Vasculitis, including Henoch-Schönlein purpura
  • Numbness or tingling (paresthesia)
  • Fainting (syncope)
  • Irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation)
  • Stroke
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation)
  • Elevated ALT levels (usually resolves upon stopping treatment)
These side effects can vary in severity and occurrence. If any unusual symptoms arise while taking Losartan, consult a healthcare provider promptly. Side effects in children are similar to those seen in adults.
 

Dosage / Direction for Use of ANGEL-50 Losartan 50mg Tablet

Always follow your doctor's instructions and consult them if you have concerns about the strength or effectiveness of losartan.

Adults, Teenagers, and Older Adults
Start with 50mg (one tablet) once daily. Full effect on blood pressure may take 3-6 weeks. Dose may increase to 100mg (two tablets) once daily if needed. Consult doctor or pharmacist if dosage adjustment is required.
 
Patients with High Blood Pressure and Type 2 Diabetes
Begin with 50mg (one tablet) daily. Depending on blood pressure response, may increase to 100mg (two tablets) daily. Can be taken with other blood pressure and diabetes medications.

Adult Patients with Heart Failure
Initiate treatment with 12.5mg once daily. Increase gradually over several weeks: 12.5mg daily in week 1, 25mg daily in week 2, 50mg daily in week 3, 100mg daily in week 4, up to 150mg daily as directed. Often used with diuretics, digitalis, and/or beta-blockers for heart failure management.

Special Patient Groups
Lower initial doses may be recommended for those starting with high diuretic doses, liver impairment, or
patients aged 75 and older. Avoid in severe liver impairment cases.

Take each tablet with water, at the same time every day. Keep taking them unless your doctor tells you to stop. You can split the 50mg tablet evenly using the score line if needed.
 

Contraindications

Do not use Losartan Tablets if:
  • You are allergic to losartan or any of the other ingredients.
  • You are more than 3 months pregnant (It's also best to avoid Losartan Tablets early in pregnancy).
  • Your liver function is severely impaired.
  • You have diabetes or kidney problems and are using a blood pressure medication that contains aliskiren.
Losartan Tablets should not be used in children under 6 years old because there is no evidence that it works in this age group.
 

Special Precautions

Before taking Losartan Tablets, inform your doctor if you have:
  • a history of angioedema
  • frequent vomiting or diarrhea causing fluid and salt loss
  • are taking diuretics or on a low-salt diet
  • kidney artery issues or recent kidney transplant
  • impaired liver function
  • heart failure, renal problems, or severe cardiac arrhythmias, especially if using a β-blocker
  • heart valve or muscle problems
  • coronary or cerebrovascular disease
  • primary hyperaldosteronism
  • are on ACE inhibitors, aliskiren, or medications affecting potassium levels
Your doctor may need to monitor kidney function, blood pressure, and electrolytes regularly. Always consult before starting Losartan Tablets.

Children and Adolescents
It is not recommended for children under 6 years old as its effectiveness has not been shown in this age group. Losartan should not be used in children with kidney or liver problems due to limited data.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Inform your doctor if you suspect pregnancy. Stop taking Losartan Tablets before or upon confirming pregnancy and switch to another medication. Avoid after the third month of pregnancy due to potential harm to the baby.

Notify your doctor if breastfeeding. Losartan Tablets are not recommended; consider alternative treatments, especially for newborns or premature babies.

Driving and Operating Machinery
Losartan is unlikely to impair driving or machine use, but it may cause dizziness or drowsiness in some. Consult your doctor if experiencing these effects before driving or operating machinery.
 

Is it safe to take Losartan 50mg Tablet with other drugs?

When using Losartan Tablets, it's important to inform your doctor or pharmacist about any other medications you are currently taking or have recently taken, as well as any you may consider taking in the future.

This includes potassium supplements, potassium-containing salt substitutes, and potassium-sparing medicines like certain diuretics (amiloride, triamterene, spironolactone), as combining these with Losartan is not recommended due to potential risks of elevated serum potassium levels.

Special caution is advised if you are also taking:
  • Other blood pressure medications, as they may further lower your blood pressure. This includes tricyclic antidepressants, antipsychotics, baclofen, and amifostine.
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as indomethacin and Cox-2 inhibitors, which can reduce the blood pressure-lowering effects of Losartan.
If you are using an ACE-inhibitor, aliskiren, or medications containing lithium, their combination with Losartan requires close monitoring by your doctor. This is particularly important if you have impaired kidney function, as using these medications together may worsen kidney function.

Your doctor may need to adjust your dosage or recommend other precautions based on your specific medical needs and the medications you are taking. Always follow your doctor's advice regarding the use of Losartan in combination with other medicines to ensure safety and effectiveness.
 

How should I store Losartan 50mg Tablet?
